VYS U14G Thunder Black Wins Annandale Premier Cup 2013

Vienna Youth Soccer (VYS) Thunder Black and AC Cugini United ’99 played in the Annandale Premier Cup on March 16th and 17th. Thunder Black won the championship for their age while United made it to the semi-finals.

Vienna started the tournament slowly, getting draws in their first two games against Arlington and Fredericksburg. This was enough for 2nd place in their 3 team division which put them in the semifinals versus hosts Annandale the following day. Thunder Black prevailed in this game, 1-0, and moved on to face Thunder Soccer Club (TSC) Siafu in the Championship match. Having just beaten Siafu in Colonial League play the week before, Vienna expected a tough response from their opponent and got exactly that. The teams were tied after regulation and the championship had to be decided by a penalty shootout, which Vienna won after 8 rounds of shots.

Cugini’s preliminary group of 3 teams for the tournament saw them face two teams which were able to knock them out of tournaments in the Fall. Needing a win or a tie versus Rage Athletica in the WAGS tournament, Rage was able to win 1-0. Freestate Freedom was the other member of the group and they beat United on a penalty shootout in the Bethesda tournament in the Fall after a 0-0 tie in regulation.

United was eager to make amends for their frustrations in the Fall and was able to turn their result against Rage around, winning 1-0. The team was able to get the lead on Freestate Freedom as well, but they were able to tie the game late and the match finished 1-1. The team knew this would be enough to get on to the next day and were eventually confirmed as the 1st seed out of their group. They would face HMMS Eagle from Pennsylvania (currently 3rd place in Region 1 Premier League) in the semifinal. HMMS played a good game and prevailed over United 2-1 in the knockout round.
