Assistant Director Todd Hamlin’s U14 United team may have moved clubs from Cugini to Herndon over the Summer of 2013, but they stuck to a familiar formula of beginning their season with a championship win at Herndon’s Dulles National Tournament for the 2nd year in a row.
The U14 Premier bracket used a round-robin format this year, meaning that the title would be determined based on the standings after all 5 teams had played a game against each other. United began the weekend with a couple of solid shutout wins against their opponents. The 3-0 and 4-0 wins showed the potential of the group. United continued their strong play on Sunday. Conceding the first goal of the morning game on a long free kick, the team rapidly responded with 4 goals to leave little doubt in the result. With the title already clinched, United kept the pressure on and winning their final match of the weekend 3-1.
Overall United completed the weekend with double the wins and points of any of the other teams. Their 14 goals for and 2 conceded created lopsided scorelines that meant they were the only team to finish the weekend with a positive goal-difference. Overall the weekend was an excellent opportunity for the girls to build their chemistry and confidence with a trip to the Adidas Labor Day Showcase in Greensboro, NC the following weekend.
