McLean '96 Players Finish Youth Careers on a High Note
June 30, 2015
Players from McLean Youth Soccer's 96 age group, a pool of 35 girls who have trained and competed together since 2011 under Head Coach and Total Futbol Director Nadir Moumen, ended their youth careers on a high note this past June by finishing as U18 Finalists at the USYS Region I Championships (Barboursville, WV) and U18 Semifinalists at the ECNL National Championships (Seattle, WA).  The deep and talented set of '96 players enabled McLean to field two elite teams at these simultaneous (June 25-30) postseason competition venues.

McLean '96 Girls Green were U18 Finalists at the 2015 USYS Region I Championships in Barboursville, WV. Shown above (L to R): TOP ROW Coach
Cindi Harkes, Tailor Gammons, Rubii Tamen, Karina Castillo and Coach Matt Lee; MIDDLE ROW Kaitlyn Forsht, Lindsey Hendricksen, Becca Voyack,
Becca Callison, Madison Crowe, Jenna Hamilton BOTTOM ROW Lea Barnes, Jessi Arens, Ta-Tiana Brodie, Elise Andrich, Mia Barringer, Stephanie Stahl.
The Region I squad, playing as McLean '96 Girls Green, handily won its group stage by outscoring River City Athletics (Maine State Cup champions) 8-1 and MSSC Pride (West Virginia wildcard team) 4-0. The team then advanced to beat New Jersey State Cup Champions PDA United 96/97 1-0 and suffered its only defeat (0-1) to Beadling Gunners (Pennsylvania West State Cup champions) in the Final.  In the first two games, Becca Voyack and Jenna Hamilton scored three goals apiece, Becca Callison and Mia Barringer each added two goals and Lea Barnes also scored once (one additional goal was ruled an own goal). Rubii Tamen scored the lone, game-winning goal in the Semifinal, sending the team through to the Final.
McLean '96 Girls ECNL were U18 Semifinalists at the 2015 ECNL National Championships in Seattle, WA. Shown above (L to R): TOP ROW Hannah
Natanson, Clare Beahn, Gracie DeGooyer, Katelyn Jensen, Caroline Kerns, Audrey Denkler, Mia Hoen-Beck, Lorato Sargeant, Coach Nadir Moumen
BOTTOM ROW Samantha Scaffidi, Jenny Riemer, Kristina Diana, Mia Gyau, Alex Connell, Alia Abu Hawa, Jarena Harmon.
At the ECNL National Finals, McLean's squad advanced out of group play after beating MVLA (Northern California) 4-2, blanking the Dallas Texans 2-0 and tying perennial powerhouse (and longtime nemesis) SoCal Blues 1-1 in a dramatic clash on the third day. Ultimately, the team fell 1-2 in the National Semifinal versus West Coast FC (Southern California) with a late - and questionable - penalty kick deciding the tight contest. Jarena Harmon and Mia Hoen-Beck powered the offense in Seattle with three goals apiece over four games, Samantha Scaffidi notched one and Gracie DeGooyer provided the epic, game-tying one touch volley in the 80th minute of the SoCal match that allowed McLean to advance to the Semifinal.
The '96 players -- who have all played on behalf of both the Green and ECNL teams at one point or another -- leave a lasting legacy of success at the highest levels of girls youth soccer. As a pool, these players won three consecutive ECNL Mid-Atlantic Conference titles, two Virginia State Cup Championships and took home hardware from numerous elite tournaments, including the Jefferson Cup, Bethesda Tournament, PDA Showcase, Disney Showcase and Discovery Cup.
From its first U15 game on Sept. 17, 2011, to its last U18 contest on June 29, 2015, the McLean '96 team finished 72-21-11 in a grand total of 104 ECNL games (statistics include conference, showcase and playoff games) with 260 goals scored (an average of 2.5 per game) and 101 goals allowed (an average of 0.97 per game). Thus the team posted a .69% win rate in the most competitive girls league in the nation. Although most ranking systems for youth soccer teams are far from perfect, they do provide a rough measure of success on the field. As of August 1, 2015, the McLean ECNL team was ranked 4th in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer and 7th nationally by GotSoccer (the Green team was ranked 12th by GotSoccer).
NCAA college coaches took notice of the teams' successes and a record number of players (33 out of 35, or 94%) will be playing collegiate soccer at some of the best Division I programs in the country, most starting in the Fall of 2015.
