For the second consecutive weekend, Reston Blue 05 (U10 Girls) were Champions at a competitive northern Virginia tournament. Playing in the U10 “Cup” Division at PWSI's DMV Premier Cup, the girls defeated teams from Arlington Soccer (ASA) and Braddock Road Youth Club (BRYC), among others, to post a perfect 4-0-0 record. Coached by Total Futbol's Fadia Hawa, the team’s staunch defense allowed only two goals the entire weekend, with both goals conceded in the final match with under five minutes remaining (the team had a comfortable 4-0 at the time). Meanwhile, Reston Blue scored 16 goals, with seven different players contributing at least one. In the first two weekends of the fall tournament season, the team has racked up 33 goals while only allowing 7, and has a perfect 8-0-0 record. WAGS Division K league play kicks off next weekend. Next tournament stop is the Columbus Day Discovery Cup held at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Montgomery County, MD.
The Reston Cyclones (U13 Boys), coached by Total Futbol's Matt Lee, reached the Final of the U13 Championship Division at the 2015 OBGC Capital Cup with two wins and one tie against teams from Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. These were the Cyclones' first competitive 11v11 games, and it was a very encouraging experience for the players, parents, and coaches. In the Final, the boys played Fury 02/03, West Virginia State Cup winners in 2014 who had gone undefeated in their bracket. The game was a tension-filled contest. Fury went up 1-0 early in the first half on a counter-attack and the Cyclones battled hard, creating several chances. About two minutes before the final whistle, the Cyclones equalized off a beautiful free kick, taken by Nico Cornell. The game went to penalties (pictured above are several of the Cyclones watching the agonizing shootout and cheering on their teammates) but, sadly, the soccer gods were unkind; the Cyclones lost 3-2 on PKs.
Herndon United '99 (U17 Girls), shown ABOVE with Head Coach Todd Hamlin, advanced to the finals of the OBGC Capital Cup Premier Bracket after going undefeated in group play. The final with McLean ECNL '99 (U17 Girls), shown BELOW with Head Coach Nadir Moumen (holding his adorable daughter, Aria!), was a very even matchup and went into halftime scoreless. Early in the second half, Caitlin Moon intercepted a pass in United’s defensive third and scored to give McLean the lead. Both teams battled back and forth and United almost had the equalizer when a blast from Katie Colonna hit the crossbar and bounced straight down. In the game’s closing seconds Layne Fadely sent a ball deep into the corner for Frankie Moore, who sent in a beautiful cross for the charging Abbey Hoisington, who knocked it in for a United equalizer. The game went straight to PKs where the ECNL keeper, Tailor Gammons, made two big saves. McLean thus edged United for the victory.
Vienna Thunder Black '98 (U17 Girls), coached by TF Director Nadir Moumen, were Champions of the OBGC Capital Cup Premier Bracket (five teams, showcase format). The team went 3-0-0, scoring 10 goals and allowing none in three games. Thunder Black are currently ranked #2 in the state of Virginia by Got Soccer.
