Reston Blue '05 relish their victory in the highly competitive Jefferson Cup.
Four teams coached by Total Futbol had a strong showing at the prestigious Jefferson Cup tournament in March—two coming home as Champions and two finishing as Semi-Finalists in large Showcase-format divisions. The Richmond, VA-based competition accepted more than 700 U10-U18 girls’ teams hailing from 36 different states for this year’s event (they turned away more than 500 teams).
For the second consecutive weekend, the Reston Blue ‘05 girls team lifted a championship trophy (they also won the March 12-13 Arlington tournament). Playing in the U10 Superior 7v7 flight, the girls racked up 22 goals in route to a perfect 4-0 record. Equally impressive, the team defense shut out every opponent they faced including a 3-0 victory in the Championship match over the host Richmond Strikers. The girls earned 3-0, 5-0, and 11-0 victories in group play against a mix of northern Virginia and Richmond-based clubs. Coached by TF’s Fadia Hawa, the team starts spring league play in early April and will conclude the 2015-16 season competing in the top bracket of the Virginian Memorial Day tournament.
McLean’s ECNL ‘99 team won the U16 Elite Orange division at Jefferson Cup Showcase, extending their unbeaten streak to 22 games across seven tournaments since September 2015. The team posted a 2-0-1 record, scoring 10 goals and conceding two. The weekend started out with a 2-2 draw versus Syracuse DA, but the squad followed that performance wit two shutouts against Alleycats ‘99/’00 NPL (4-0) and NJ Stallions Stampede NPL. Coached by TF Director Nadir Moumen, McLean’s next major tournament will be the annual ECNL event at the PDA Showcase over Memorial Day weekend.
In the U16 Girls Superior Orange division, Herndon United ‘99 finished as Semi-Finalists, despite winning all three of its games with shutouts. The squad notched a total of five goals, tying in overall points (26) with the Finalists of the 16-team division, but ultimately finishing in third place due to fewer goals scored. Coached by TF Assistant Director Todd Hamlin, Herndon United competed in the Region I Champions League Elite Red division this Spring and will finish its season at the Columbia Invitational over Memorial Day weekend.
VYS Thunder Black ‘98 were Semi-Finalists in the U17 Superior Orange division, scoring six goals and conceding five against opponents from Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Florida. The team’s final stats of 2-1-0 left them in fourth place of the 12-team division and allowed them to claim a Semi-Finalist finish. Coached by Nadir Moumen, Thunder Black will also cap off the season by competing in the PDA Showcase.
